LOGISTICS 3PL CROSS-DOCKING

PRODUCT DISTRIBUTION CENTRES

The global nature of customer demand for product availability and accessibility, means that it is not always financially viable or feasible for a retailer or a manufacturer to dedicate a distribution centre (DC) to service all retail outlets or end users.  Third Party Logistics providers (3PL companies) offer facilities, the Material Handling Equipment (MHE) fleet and the staffing solutions to provide cost effectove order fulfillment on behalf of the manufacturers. A 3PL business model is based on effective, high level of material turn over.

The pallet racking and storage solutions for a 3PL logistics and cross docking providers are very similar to those of  a distribution centre but with increased flexibility, consolidating the operation of many “mini” distribution centres under one roof, while servicing a variety of end users with unique packaging and shipping requirements.

3PL customers look for flexibility in the warehouse design, as customers and product lines change with each contract.  A 3PL provider typically invests more in rack protection (utilizing roll formed / structural / hybrid frame designs, incorporating Set Back or Cantilever / Recessed Leg designs).  as material handling equipment traffic moves quickly and faces a greater potential for damage to the racking.

A Cross Dock application differs from a traditional distribution centre in that the inbound material is often not repackaged prior to being loaded and shipped off to the end user or retailer.  Operated by a retailer or a 3rd party, the inbound pallets move through the facility very quickly (almost dock to dock or, “across the docks”), leaving no time or requirement to store pallets on racking.  Racking in a cross docking application is typically single Selective and utilized to assist with staging, dunnage/empty pallet storage, or quarantine quality related purposes.
